Creating page borders in Microsoft Word for Mac

This one is for my Sister.  She was trying to do a page border for my nephew's 9th birthday party invitation, but couldn’t seem to get it to work. Sometimes we do a shape border to try and achieve this, but Word has the ability to add a page border. In the Mac version of Word, go to the Design tab (or ribbon), then click on Page Border. Happy birthday, James! 💜 … [Read more...]

Table Properties – Did they disappear? [Irritating MS Word]

I'm not sure if it's just me, however I found this very irritating and was using the Table >> Table Properties... menu for a few days before I rediscovered the button in the ribbon. In case you missed it, in one of the updates the "Table Properties" button has been relabelled "Properties". :-) Probably obvious to a lot of people - I just had a brain-fart moment.   … [Read more...]

Can’t make Powerpoint Text Transparent

Recently I was dealing with Powerpoint and reopened an old presentation to find that the text in the presentation which had once been transparent was now no longer so. Turns out there is a trick to this (isn't there always :-)), which requires you to add a solid line border to the text and change the transparency of this as well. Seems it is something new in one of the recent updates - … [Read more...]

Linking Google Sheet Cells Between Sheets (aka Spreadsheets)

This was something I've only done occasionally in Excel since I've started this blog, and never had the need to in Google Sheets - Excel has the capability to link cells from one workbook to cells in another workbook. This is also referred to as an external reference. This usually is done in the format: =[Budget.xlsx]Annual!C10 Where : Budget.xlsx  is the name of the spreadsheet … [Read more...]

Alternate upgrade software location for Office 2016 for Mac

Recently I was hit with a repeated bar across the top of Microsoft Word saying that one of the advantages of having an Office 365 subscription is that I can get free upgrades to my software. Awesome, fantastic, just click here. So I did... I'm a Mac user, so these instructions are relevant to other Mac users. Sorry Windows guys - I'll post an update if DH ever asks me to upgrade his … [Read more...]

Integrating Google Forms in a WordPress Site [Following up requests]

I've had two requests in the last week for the following: "How can we have a form that people can use to request a copy of a download, and then we can follow up later? I just want to use a spreadsheet." There are a number of autoresponder-type systems that allow you to create a form, where a mailer is sent day 0 (when they sign up) and then follow up emails are sent on the days that you specify … [Read more...]

Reader Question: Showing and Hiding Themes [OpenOffice & LibreOffice]

Jerry left a comment saying that he had trouble with the following: "cannot find how to show/hide themes in calc" Thanks, Jerry. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but some refer to the Gallery in OpenOffice as 'themes'. (Please leave a comment below if this is not what you meant.) To show and hide the Gallery (in Calc, Writer or Impress) simply select the following in the … [Read more...]

Beautiful borders and backgrounds in OpenOffice [or LibreOffice]

I received the following query from Melissa: How do I create page borders that are nice, like ivy leaves or coloured swirly lines? All I can figure out are the straight black border lines. Thanks, Melissa. Personally, I've found that the border tool is generally only for variations on the straight border as you have mentioned. There are two scenarios where I want a "fancy" border for my … [Read more...]

Spell check does not work for Mac 2011

If you are having difficulties with spell check Mac in the new Office 365 suite, then it's probably no surprise - especially if you're not using Windows and not in the US. However I find that the advice provided on the MS website is actually working for me, so I'd suggest running through the first three steps below. And sometimes it has to be done on documents as you open them (every one). I was … [Read more...]
